Last month Waitrose Weekend published my feature inspired by Ravinder Bhogal’s community lunches. The chef proprietor of Jikoni (oh my goodness the menu at that restaurant), is otherwise known as Cook in Boots and it was her idea to cook up a £12 lunch with £1 of each meal going to charities The Felix Project and Food Cycle.
The key message is that food should never be wasted and there are amazing people out there cooking up delicious meals using otherwise surplus food, bringing people together. As one volunteer pointed out, it’s not just those in obvious need who benefit from companionship around the table; it’s the volunteers too. We all have much to gain from sitting around the table together.
